What’s New in the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe

The Hyundai Santa Fe has been one of the best-selling SUVs in the U.S. since its 2001 debut. It has also been a hit with automotive research companies – routinely earning top marks for safety and reliability from Kelley Blue Book, Consumer Reports and other industry experts.

With a rising demand for SUVs, Hyundai has stepped up its game by completely redesigning the Santa Fe for 2019. Here are some of the updates you can expect to see in the newest model.

No More Sport Edition

In 2013, Hyundai added a third row to the popular Santa Fe and introduced the Sport edition as the two-row version. Like its bigger sibling, the Santa Fe Sport offered a roomy cabin, superb crash test ratings and plenty of standard features.

Beginning with the 2019 model year, the Sport edition will become the five-passenger Santa Fe, and the three-row variant will be the Santa Fe XL. Hyundai is slated to upgrade the XL’s cabin to fit eight passengers for 2020.

New Engine and Transmission

Buyers have three engine options to choose from:

·         185-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder

·         235-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder

·         190-horsepower 2.2-liter diesel

All Santa Fes come with an eight-speed transmission, replacing the six-speed from the previous generation.

Exterior Upgrades

The 2019 Santa Fe got a facelift, including a chain-mail-style chrome grille, LED daytime running lights and headlights and a wider stance – making it look sleeker and sportier than previous iterations.

Buyers have many bold color options to choose from, such as:

·         Lava Orange

·         Rainforest

·         Scarlet Red

·         Stormy Sea

Interior Tweaks

The new Santa Fe is almost three inches longer than its predecessor, making the cabin roomier than ever. Hyundai says the improved suspension and rear shock placement make for a more comfortable ride.

Safety and Technology Features

All 2019 Santa Fe trim levels come standard with the SmartSense suite of advanced safety features, which include:

·         Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist – Provides audio and visual alerts when a vehicle is detected in the driver’s blind spot.

·         Driver Attention Warning – Analyzes driving patterns and provides alerts if driver fatigue or inattention is detected.

·         Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection – Warns drivers when approaching a slowing or stopped vehicle or pedestrian and brakes to avoid impact.

·         Lane Keeping Assist – Applies corrective steering assistance to help keep your vehicle in its lane if you drift without signaling.

·         Rear-Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist – Helps drivers back out of a parking space or driveway by detecting rear cross-traffic and providing an audible warning.

·         Safety Exit Assist – When child door locks are activated, it warns you of approaching traffic coming from behind to prevent passengers from exiting until it’s safe.

Drivers have also come to expect smartphone integration in their vehicles, and the Santa Fe delivers with its standard seven-inch touchscreen display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capabilities. The new model also includes a heads-up smart display that projects critical information right in front of the driver, so they don’t have to take their eyes off the road.

Pricing and Availability

Despite the long list of upgrades included in the redesigned Santa Fe, the price is nearly the same as the 2018 model. The 2019 Santa Fe starts at $25,500 – just $550 more than the comparable 2018 Santa Fe Sport. The new model year also comes in many more trim levels, offering features such as leather seating, a panoramic sunroof and hands-free smart liftgate.

The 2019 model began rolling out in U.S. dealerships in August, so buyers don’t have to wait until the end of 2018 to drive off in a brand-new Santa Fe.
