Hyundai Elantra Named One of the Best New Cars for Teens

Congrats! Your teen just landed their first job, joined a new after-school activity or signed up to volunteer for their favorite cause. Naturally, this is great news, but it may also leave you scrambling to find a suitable car. After all, your teen needs safe and reliable transportation to take full advantage of the opportunities that have been presented to them.

With hundreds of models to choose from, you may be having some trouble finding the perfect car for your teen. In these cases, a little internet research goes a long way. U.S. News & World Report rated the 2017 Hyundai Elantra the “Best New Car for Teens $25k to $30k,” and Consumer Report rated the 2018 Hyundai Elantra as one of the “Best New Cars for Teens.” They looked at metrics like safety features and reliability when making their selections.

Safety Rating

Any good starter car should have a stellar safety rating, since even the most responsible teens are more likely to get into an accident due to inexperience. Statistically speaking, your teen is two times as likely to get in a deadly crash as you if they are an inexperienced driver. Additionally, car accidents are the number one cause of death among teenagers, so it’s important you choose a car that can prevent accidents and minimize harm if one should ever happen.

The 2018 Hyundai Elantra has received excellent safety ratings from the auto industry’s most reputable sources. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) made the Elantra a TOP SAFETY PICK+ of the year,

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives it four out of five stars.

Safety Features

The Elantra offers plenty of high-tech safety features. Starting with the SE trim, all Elantras have Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross-traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist. Using cameras and sensors, the car alerts the driver if they are about to back up into another vehicle or if they are attempting to move into an occupied lane. Elantras also have a rearview camera with dynamic guidelines to show drivers what’s in their path as they reverse.

If you want more advanced safety features, you will have to opt for the Ultimate Package on the Limited trim Elantra. While it’s a little more expensive, it’s worth it for the features you receive, including:
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Smart Cruise Control
  • Automatic High Beam Assist

The Blue Link® Connected Care and Remote Packages also come standard in the Limited trim, and you have the option to upgrade to the Guidance Package. This technology notifies emergency personnel if your young driver is in a collision, allows them to push a button for emergency or roadside assistance and lets them schedule their next service appointment, all from the car. Parents will be happy to know that they can monitor their child’s whereabouts and receive smartphone alerts if their teen is driving past curfew, speeding or traveling too far away.

Cost: What You’ll Get at Each Price Point

Starter cars are a complicated purchase because you want the driver safe, but you also know there’s a good chance they may get in an accident or outgrow the car by the time they head off to college, move out on their own or start a family.

The Hyundai Elantra is an affordable option considering the level of quality you receive even in the basic trims. The starting MSRP fluctuates depending on which of the six trims you choose.
  • SE – $16,950 manual, $17,950 automatic – There aren’t many fancy features at the base level, but drivers will get decent fuel economy: 26/36/29 mpg for city/highway/combined driving with manual transmission, and 29/38/33 mpg with the automatic transmission. This will save your adolescent driver money at the pump.
  • SEL – $18,850 – With this modest price bump comes additional safety features to keep the driver safe, including a rearview camera, Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross-traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist. You also receive a tech boost, with a 7-inch display and touchscreen and Android Auto™ and Auto CarPlay™ capabilities.
  • Value Edition – $19,850 – This model is similar to the SEL, but offers convenient features like the hands-free smart trunk that unlatches when you stand behind your vehicle, a power sunroof, LED Daytime Running Lights, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic temperature control and a Proximity Key so you can start the engine at the push of a button.
  • Eco – $20,550 – Like its name suggests, this model is eco-friendly. With a 1.4L turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine and the 7-speed EcoShift® Dual Clutch Transmission, you’ll get a whopping 32/40/35 mpg for city, highway and combined driving, respectively.
  • Sport – $21,800 manual, $22,900 dual clutch – For a compact car, the 201 horsepower 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine certainly gives a little kick. At this price point, you are getting into nice-to-have options, like a sleeker exterior, leather seats, contrast stitching and turn signals on the side mirrors. You can also upgrade the car’s tech features with a Premium Package.
  • Limited – $22,100 – This trim is top of the line inside and out, with a chrome front grille, HID headlights and the Blue Link Connected Care and Remote Packages. Buyers can also upgrade to the Ultimate Package, which features a wide array of luxurious add-ons and safety features.
We should note that there are also two 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT hatchbacks available for those looking for a little bit of extra room, with the base model costing $19,350 and the sport model costing $23,250.
